Titanic Connections

100 years ago today, my Great-Grandmother, Nellie Steele, must have been grieving the fact that she had missed the most exciting trip of her life.  Her fiance, my Great-Grandfather, Jack McCurrach, had travelled to Canada 1 1/2 years earlier and was awaiting her arrival so they could marry.  But her sister was very ill and expecting a baby, and as it turned out she died about a month after the baby was born.  My Great-Grandmother stayed behind to support her sister and then take care of the baby girl until she could be adopted out.  The original plan was to take the Titanic to Canada.  Families on both sides of the Atlantic remember the story.  The disappointment that she felt in being delayed in her trip and missing the most celebrated sailing of any ship in history must have been devestating.  And the relief felt when she found out about the sinking of the ship must have knocked the wind out of her.  Talk about feeling somehow blessed -...

Getting Eggs Without Cartons

As you could probably guess, styrofoam egg cartons bug the crap out of me.  I usually buy the organic eggs from Safeway and they come in cardboard cartons.  But when we got out to the Hutterite colony I can buy local eggs for less then half the price of the organic.  Problem is, they come in styrofoam cartons. So the last time we went out, I took the old, heirloom egg basket that I acquired from one of my grandmothers, and got the nice Hutterite lady (Sarah) to get me eggs without a carton.  Straight from the cardboard flat, the eggs went into my basket and came home that way. Now, the Hutterites will take the cartons back for re-use, but they can only be re-used so many times before they are worn out.  This just takes me out of the loop and removes my responsibility for that carton.  Remember ... there are always options. P.S. - if you have an option of buying eggs directly from the layers (or their owners) I don't think you need a special baske...

Horrible Mother

Today I feel like a horrible mother.  I was in a fine mood until I picked my lovely, wonderful son up at school.  And he started to spin like a top, and chatter on and on about Pokemon, and yammer on about nothing else.  Then, when we got home, it was like pulling teeth to get him to do his spelling.  Tears ensued (as they often do), but the spelling test is 2 days early this week because they have Thursday and Friday off, so if we don't get it right today, his spelling test results are bad (and on the report card he brought home yesterday, spelling had gone from an A to a B, so I'm focused on that a bit right now).  So I yell at him.  And get mad at him.  And hug him.  And he screws around.  And I get mad again.  It's like an evil little dance - with some tears being real and some being fake - and some of my anger being real and some just to get my point across.
